Antonio Gades
(Antonio Esteve Ródenas; Elda, 1936 - Madrid, 2004)
Spanish dancer and choreographer.
First director of the Spanish National Ballet during three years, until he set up in 1981 a new company with the female dancer Cristina Hoyos. Together with her he participated as dancer and choreographer in several films of Carlos Saura: Bodas de sangre (1981), Carmen (1983) y El amor brujo (1986). Antonio Gades was one of the big renewer of flamenco dance, which he treated to take off the superficial to come back to its genuine essence.
